Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canal du Midi is considered one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 17th century. From our campsite in the Aude, set off to discover this masterpiece designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet and explore the landscapes of the Lauragais that played a key role in its history.

The Canal du Midi, an exceptional achievement

Linking Toulouse to the Mediterranean Sea, the Canal du Midi stretches for more than 240 kilometres across southern France. Built during the reign of Louis XIV, it still offers a unique way to explore the region, passing through characterful villages, historic locks and unspoilt landscapes.

In the footsteps of Pierre-Paul Riquet

The history of the Canal du Midi is closely linked to the Montagne Noire and the Lauragais. It was here that Pierre-Paul Riquet developed the system that would supply the canal with water. Thanks to an ingenious network of channels and reservoirs, his project became one of the most ambitious engineering feats of its time.

The Rigole de la Plaine and the Montagne Noire

Close to Le Bout du Monde campsite, the Rigole de la Plaine still stands as a remarkable example of this engineering expertise. Dug in the 17th century, this feeder canal carries water from the Montagne Noire to the Canal du Midi. Lined with shaded paths, it is a pleasant place for walking or cycling in the heart of nature.

Lake Saint-Ferréol, the source of the Canal du Midi

Located at the foot of the Montagne Noire, Lake Saint-Ferréol played a vital role in the history of the Canal du Midi. Created to store the water used to supply the canal, it remains one of Pierre-Paul Riquet's greatest achievements. Today, it is a popular destination for watersports, swimming and scenic walks.

Walking, cycling or boating along the canal

The Canal du Midi can be explored in many different ways. Walkers and cyclists enjoy the paths that follow its banks, while boat trips offer a different perspective on its locks and engineering structures. A peaceful experience that invites you to slow down and admire the landscapes of the Lauragais.
